Conceptual Statement for RFI

2022 is a year full of difficulties. The escalation of conflicts between nations, communities and even neighbors has resulted in many forms of violence. During the Covid-19 pandemic, now three years in, hate crimes against the Asian community have become frighteningly commonplace. It is inevitable to feel pain and helplessness when witnessing brutal, appalling behaviors, such as those by the young toward the elderly, or women who can’t fight back. Unfortunately this is our reality.

Even in Los Angeles, one of the most multicultural cities in the world, this issue grows and presses for our attention. In fragile times such as these, we're being confronted about what our values are, given they are the foundation of what creates the reality of our future.

With a sense of urgency, given the symbolism of what had transpired in 1871, the city is calling for a place of remembrance. The city will pave the path for true and honest communication to strengthen a trusting relationship with their ethnic communities. This memorial should convey a clear message that the city values peaceful solutions to all racial issues and conflicts. Showing us that everyone deserves a safe and welcome place in our society, regardless of where they come from.

I chose Primary Site 1 to create a “time machine-like” place for visitors, pedestrians and those who live and work in the area. This site overlooking the original Chinatown location will provide visitors with a visual and physical connection to the key stories of Calle de Los Negros. They will be invited to explore the space where they can feel connected to the story as if they are the witnesses. Visitors will use a touchscreen kiosk, navigate an interactive map to discover how the history unfolded at each location, and look at the site where the first tragic incident occurred. There will be a digital monitor which will present news of anti-Asian crimes to do a reality check in order to uncover what is important for the future. This monitor will be installed onto one of the metal panels that will exhibit historical information, documents, a timeline, etc. Lastly, to celebrate unity with different cultures, I would integrate a Moon Gate, a common architectural element in Chinese gardens. It represents Chinese tradition originating from Taoist philosophy, to be in harmony with nature.

This use of a Chinese garden theme will be repeated in the Secondary sites to ultimately be tied with the primary memorial. Since the Secondary sites will provide exposure to a broader audience across downtown, I chose Primary Site 1 and Primary Site 7. Both sites will convey key information associated with the massacre. Also, they will highlight the contributions of Chinese immigrants that can be found in unexpected places throughout the city. all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
